Casting, smart TV apps or a streaming box: which is best for a rental?
Three common ways to put streaming on a rental TV, and the trade-offs of each.
There are three common setups. None is wrong; they suit different properties.
| Smart TV apps | Streaming box | Casting from the guest’s phone | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whose account | Usually the host’s | Usually the host’s | The guest’s |
| Reset needed | Sign out each stay | Sign out each stay | None |
| Works on any TV | Only if it is a smart TV | Any TV with HDMI | Needs a cast-capable TV or box |
| Guest effort | Low | Low | A few taps |
What we recommend
Casting first, on a managed box, with a simple home screen as the fallback. It keeps accounts with the people who own them and gives every room the same experience.
The one thing to check
Casting needs the guest’s phone and the TV on the same Wi-Fi network. If you use a separate guest network, test casting before you rely on it.
